#1: Deja Vu Author: JuntaJoe, Location: TexasPosted: Thu Jun 29, 2006 11:49 pm At 5:15pm Thursday, our site reverted to the stored version our host company had make last Sunday.
Everything before was lost of those 4 days.
Hope you didn't post your lock combination here and promptly forget it.
It seems the host company unilaterally "updated" us to phpBB version 20 and wiped out tons of stuff. Brf was able to restore most of the "skin" elements, but our directories were still barren. I was faced with the choice of either losing those 4 days or losing tons of Brf's code work here.
So I chose to lose the days. My decision and my responsibility. It's all on me.
I might have let staff and senior members weigh in on this decision if I hadn't been facing a Saturday night deadline of losing the host backup completely. I had to make the choice given what Brf had informed me about our losses.
Since we didn't have any significant activities going, the only real losses were mostly some feature posting by me in the tech board and some minor chatting posts in other places. As posts go, I probably lost the most.
The admins and staff will get together in order to avoid an issue like this in the future. We will gently update of phpBB to version 20 on our own and I will likely begin backing up our system midweek so that between the host backup on weekends and mine there will only be a few days lost no matter what calamity hits us.
We will become more protected as a result of this incident.
As the old saying goes: What doesn't kill us will make us stronger.
You have my sincerest apologies for any posting losses you may have occured.
Joe

It would have been OK if they would have just restored the code directories and left the forum database as is.
#3: Author: s_stabeler, Posted: Fri Jun 30, 2006 5:20 am well, since when have they been logical? I suppsoe we can get over whta has happened. it's a shame we lost the wile E coyote thread, thouhg.
#4: Author: NibbyCat, Location: Eastern OhioPosted: Fri Jun 30, 2006 6:20 am I haven't gotten down that far, but for future ideas, if you (any of us) are particularly fond of a topic that gets lost, then start it up again, even improve it if you need. For example, Wile E. could be expanded to all of the Loony Toons universe or cartoon villains in general.
#5: Author: s_stabeler, Posted: Fri Jun 30, 2006 8:16 am well,I may well re-start it, but i don'tknow.
#6: Author: Eddy, Posted: Sat Jul 01, 2006 2:05 am This is why I keep all the combinations to my luggage as 1-2-3-4-5.
#7: Author: s_stabeler, Posted: Sat Jul 01, 2006 2:08 am hahahaha. now, everyone in the world will know.
#8: Author: JuntaJoe, Location: TexasPosted: Sat Jul 01, 2006 2:12 am Yeah, go ahead and invite him over.
While you fumble open his suitcase full of dirty laundry, he'll be cleaning the beer out of your fridge.
#9: Author: s_stabeler, Posted: Sat Jul 01, 2006 2:17 am what beer? and if he touched dad's cider, well, he'll get a very fast fitness lesson.
#10: Author: JuntaJoe, Location: TexasPosted: Sat Jul 01, 2006 2:19 am You underestimate Eddy's powers of consumption and evasion.
#11: Author: s_stabeler, Posted: Sat Jul 01, 2006 2:22 am and you underestimate my familiy's powers of abnormal speed.

Remember that we "Yanks" invented unorthodox warfare about, oh, 230 years ago.
I'm sure that Eddy would load that suitcase full of dirty socks and steal the cider while you all were passed out from the fumes.
By the time everyone recovered, he'd be halfway back to Heathrow.
#13: Author: s_stabeler, Posted: Sat Jul 01, 2006 3:09 am sorry, but we're used to the smell of dirty socks.by the time he'd stolen tyhe cider, we'd already have both exits bocked.
