I brought up this novel: The Stars my Destination by Alfred Bester in a thread in the social board... It is probably my favorite novel, although I havent read it in 30 years.
As a prelude, without ruining the story for anyone, it starts like this:
A scientist named Jaunt, was doing some experiment or another in his lab and accidently set his lab bench on fire. He started yelling for the fire extinguisher, which was all the way across the huge lab room... and then suddenly found himself standing next to it.
He had teleported. Once he figured out how he did it, he taught everyone he knew, and before long, everyone was "Jaunting"... Which solved the urban transportation problem, but wrecked havoc with privacy.
That is all background to this novel written in 1956. Its unlikely hero, Gully Foyle (that name reminds me of the guy who plays the cop captain on CSI -- Paul Guilfoyle), is thrust into a spy-story. It is a cool SCI-Fi (almost fantasy) that will keep you turning page-after-page. |
