Mozilla has released the 'next generation' Firefox browser and are calling it Bon Echo. Here's a link to the release notes and download page http://www.mozilla.org/projects/bonecho/releases/2.0a1.html

I did break the rules and load it even though I'm using Firefox 1.5.0.1 and it did create some havok with my Firefox for a few days (nothing a little tinkering didn't fix).

Also, it is only an alpha release for testing.

So far, I like what I see out of it and haven't found any bugs, but my online time has been limited the last few days (see my thread in the Great Hall  )

More to come as I keep tinkering with it.

straight from the web site...

Changes in this Development Milestone

Here are some new features in Bon Echo Alpha 1 that require feedback:

* Changes to tabbed browsing behavior
* New data storage layer for bookmarks and history (using SQLlite)
* Extended search plugin format
* Updates to the extension system to provide enhanced security and to allow for easier localization of extensions
* Support for SVG text using svg:textPath

There are no extensions, plug-ins, or themes that I know of yet and I image there won't be many as it is a test release. Hopefully though I'm wrong about that as they may provide insight into functionality issues that can be reported.

I'm also curious to see how using a SQL based database will work with history and bookmarks. Maybe increased page load speeds?
Perhaps Brf would be able to shed some light on this as I'm not as familiar with SQL as I would like to be.

And Bannie, you flatter me!

Well, I'm not one of those people eager to beta test software.

So I'll wait until it is fully completed before updating to it.

Now all we have to do is convince the ISP's to support Firefox.

Earthlink didn't support it very well and my new SBC isn't fond of it either.

What do you mean, doesnt support it?

What should your browser have to do with your ISP?

I know that Earthlink now will support it as far as settings, although to use the accelerator technology, you have to do the proxy settings yourself. Since being on Earthlink dial-up for the last month or so, I haven't had any problems including secure sites, accelerator, etc etc. But, once again, I haven't used Bon Echo for everything yet...

accelerator? Oh ha... I forgot those things existed. Do they even bother with those on broadband? My last benchmarking read over 4Mb/s on two sites. I doubt you could accelerate much beyond that....

Yeah, the speeds I had from Qwest when I worked for them were almost legendary!

But, with the current accomodations, broadband just isn't possible. I don't use the accelerator either. Not in that big of a hurry I guess... :P

oi, 56k. I miss that like I miss VHS :P

I was on a wireless network at school that had a speed on 11 mbs (as appose to the one I normally have of 54 mps) and I was getting antsy as hell waiting for the pages to load in

Nice speeds there!

The nice part of living in Omaha is that being a communications hub for the country and having Offutt AFB (Strategic Space Command), there is a lot of bandwidth to be had here, if you want to cough up the loot.

Most ISP's offer toolbar and security features, but they always are loaded to IE.

It was really bad with Earthlink as they removed almost all of the security tools on the Firefox Earthlink edition toolbar.

And when I went to SBC to dl their virus sweeper, they said they only would download through IE or Netscape browsers.

Oh. I never bother with that. I saw some of that when I installed the SBC DSL at work. It was hell to uninstall too... all this Yahoo crap was loaded into IExplore. I ended up reformatting the computer I used as a console.

Alot of those security features won't work with Firefox, but they are unneeded anyway, unless you are using an Active-X plug-in.

I don't use the security features now either other than the free anti-viral.

I'm using a mix of products of my own choosing for security. Ad-aware, ewido, MS security updates and firewall, and the free SBC anti-viral.

I'm guessing it works ok, but I hate that SBC keeps dropping me notes, emails, and flashing icons to download more stuff.

I need to give SBC a call and tell them to turn off all that crap.

I wonder if SBC can or if it's automated crap...

The thing that sold me originally on Firefox is the built in security, as in the pop-up blocker, the extensions are just an added bonus! I used to use ad-aware, but found spybot to be a little stronger (just a personal opinion there and we all know about opinions! :P ) As for AV, I will always swear by Panda's line of software, they have never done me wrong!

I plan on putting Bon Echo throw the ringer this weekend and I'll relate what I find.

OT: Panda is a bunch of spammers. That line on the end of their emails, "At Panda Software we respect your privacy. If you don't want to receive further communication, click here," is a lie. On March 22, I went there for a free checkup. Immediately they sent an email. I unsubscribed. I've gotten at least one email a day from them since. I've tried to unsubscribe every day. Yesterday I wrote to the sales/marketing people and the webmaster. Today, I found 2 more emails from them so I reported them as Spam to Gmail.
