I struggled through eight volumes before I gave up in despair of *any!* *fricking!* *subplot!* *ever!* *being!* *resolved!*
*tugs on his braid and holds a lengthy 10-page whispered conversation in which it is established that his gaze is so icy that it could damp the fires of a forge -- for the umpteenth time*

SPOILER ALERT
Hey, books 1 - 6 were pretty darn good.
And by the end of book nine, the male half of the source was even cleansed. In book 10, some things are actually moving again! |

Thanks Batch, I'm at book 3 :P
I saw the bookcover of Path of Daggers so Rand seems to be still alive then ;)
The Wheel of Time series are fantasy books (around 10 parts atm, supposed to be 1 more soon).
Basic layout of the books:
Simple village people get involved in situations of epic proportions. The different groups, cities & people have their own allegiances, political issues, racial biases, etc. The first book will raise many questions, the second book will answer some and raise more questions, etc. etc.
The series follow different protagonists so you visit every group, see it through their eyes and then switch to another group to see how they see it. Pretty cool.
Also the lack of an absolute bad guy (well there is One, but he's not the only One :P) and it not being so clear who the good guys are (and if it's clear, will they remain good?) etc. etc.
Also, within a story so over the top the people still remain people with their simple thoughts and desires. Read it :P

I got questions from The Eye of the World resolved in The Great Hunt & questions from both those books resolved in The Dragon Reborn. Don't really see how things are not moving :P

| Just keep on a-readin' a couple more volumes and you'll reach that magical place where you realize that you've long since ceased to care about any of the characters, no matter how often you're reminded that their face is all hard planes, as though it were carved from slabs of granite; no matter how often you notice that next to their cold eyes, a glacier seems warm. :D |

These books were recommended to me several years ago by a friend, and I got dragged to a Q&A session with the author.
I started the first one, but found it very poor compared to much of the other work in this genre being produced around that time.
I do remember somebody asking at the QA session how many books would be in the series and he replied 7 (or was it 8?) - one for each spoke on the wheel of time... I guess that means something to those that have read them lol
It does seem to me that if he has now stretched it out to 10 (presumably to keep his bank balance ticking over nicely) it is not surprising not much happens in later ones as he seemed clear what the story line would be back then, so the extra material presumably was never meant to be included. |

Hahaha, indeed, the wheel of Time is supposed to have 7 spokes.
Seems he missed that target by a few. I don't care though atm, we'll see if Maus is right within a few weeks (7 more books to finish, shouldn't take longer then a month with the rate I'm reading atm...)

Actually, I'm halfway Knife of Dreams (nr. 11 already), and though I found 8-10 a bit on the unnecessary side, things actually finish in book 11 and it got me interested :D
Just too bad I have to wait around 2 more years before nr. 12 comes out.
(His last, Jordan swears, like yearright.)

Just got ahold of number 11.
Got to say I'm interested in the fact that Galad manages to take control of the Children of the Light and is willing to align them with anybody who is fighting the Seanchan *Rand*, thereby possibly bringing a fairly major faction to the last battle on the side of the right.
And that was in the first few pages of the prologue ... bodes well for this book actually moving again, finally. (I still say books 7 - 10 were too slow, though.) |
