For the past 29 years, every Wednesday evening we've been "buzzed" by what I think is a local Air National Guard. When I can, I go out and watch the planes, and wave. Ok, I'm a goof. Anyhow, I've been wondering for about 29 years what kinds of planes are roaring past. I've tried Googling, but I'm not sure I'd know just by the words in a blurb if a site would have what I'm looking for.
My immediate want is a site that has some way of identifying the various models of military aircraft. But, to make the thread of more value, I'd like it to be open to all reference-type sites for the military, what various insignia means, weaponry, jargon translation, whatever. |

I typed in "Identify airplane silhouette" in google and found this site.... which is full of popup ads, but has a searchable database of sorts:

| There is also a book that can be purchased from most book stores in paperback entitled Jane's Aircraft Recognition Guide for around $15. You may be able to check it out from the local library. It will categories the planes and will help you identify them by the silhouette. |
