OK.... I think I am about ready to discuss rules and proceedures for the test game, which is at http://castledoom.com/forum/game1.php

Feel free to comment or critique any of these rule suggestions

General Game Control:

Players will join at the website by clicking the "Join Game" on the right-hand side. After joining, that button will be labelled "Update Player", and will store the Player Name and Country Color chosen by the player.

Below the "Update Player" button will be a drop-down box of all the countries. If a neutral or enemy country is chosen, the fields below will display the country number and name, and the Player Name of the country's owner. If a player choses one his own countries, the "Update Country" form will be displayed to the lower-right. Clicking "Update Country" will store that country's game-moves and the country's name if changed.

Below the country-info is the send Message box. If a message is typed in the empty box below the "Message to" button, clicking the button will send the message to the Player selected in the drop-down. Messages are displayed in the bottom-right and include any messages sent by the player, or directed to that player or Everyone. Messages sent directly from one player to another are private and will not be shown to any other players.

The game will consist of as many Game Turns as neccessary until only one player remains.

Each game turn will be split into the Player Phase and Computer Phase.

In the Player Phase, each player will enter the moves for each country they control and my send messages to any other players or to Everyone.

In the Computer Phase, all of the players' moves and attacks will be reconciled as if they were done all at once, Then reinforcements will rewarded to remaining players. The Game will send messages to Everyone explaining what happened.

Player Phase:

During the Player Phase, each player will select each of their countries and enter their move and store using the Update Country button.

Each country will start out with a 5-platoon army. The actions each platoon may do is: Defend, Move, Invade, Attack. The Update Country form will automatically show the valid moves possible. It is only neccessary for the player to enter the number of platoons doing each action.

Defend: These platoons will remain in the country and Defend against any attackers.

Move: These platoons will move to an adjacent country also controlled by the player. These platoons will be subtracted from the Defense of the country they are leaving and added to the Defense of the country they enter.

Invade: These platoons will leave their current country and enter an adjacent neutral country.

Attack: These platoons will attack an adjacent enemy country. Even though attacking, they are still counted in their current country's defense.

Computer Phase:

During this phase, the game will automatically reconcile any player moves and attacks and record what happened using Messages to Everyone.

The computer phase consists of: Movement, Invasions, Attacks, Reinforcements.

Movement: Any platoons Moved by players will be subtracted from the defense of their former country, and added to their new one.

Invasions: Any platoons involved in an Invasion will be subtracted from the defense of their former country. If the Invaded country has no other players invading, control of that country will be turned over to the invader. If more than one country attempts to Invade the same country, there will be a free-for-all battle with each invading force attacking and defending against all other invaders. The battle will be repeated until no more than one player's Invading force remains. If all forces are eliminated, the country will remain neutral; otherwise the coutry will be turned over to the victor.

Attacks: Any country attacking another will result in a battle. The attacking platoons will be pitted against all of the platoons remaining in the country attacked, whether those defenders are attacking or defending. If, after the attack, the defending force is eliminated, the attacked country will become neutral.

Reinforcements: Any country controlled by a player at the beginning of the Computer Phase, which is still controlled by that player at the end, will receive 2 platoons for reinforcements. Any neutral country successfully invaded by a player, will receive 1 platoon reinforcement for the new controlling player.

Battles:

There are two types of Battles: Invasions and Attacks.

In Attacks, the attacking force consists of those platoons designated to attack the other country. The defending force will be any platoons remaining in that country including those Defending, those that Moved into the country, and those which are Attacking other countries from that country. It does not include any platoons which Moved out of the country or Invaded neutral countries.

Each platoon, whether attacking or defending, has a 50% chance of causing an enemy casuality. After ALL of the attacks for every player in every country has been resolved, the casualities will be removed from each force. Note that the same platoon may defend against any number of attacks, even if it is involved in an attack of its own.

In Invasions, the attacking and defending forces will be those designated as Invading a neutral country. Each invading player will attack every other player invading that country until no more than one player's forces remains in that country. If a single player invades one country from two or more neighboring countries, those forces will be combined into a single attacking force. After all combinations of attacker/defender are resolved, casualties will be removed. If more than one player's invading forces remain, the battle will be repeated with the remaining forces until no more than one player's force remains.

Hmmmm.... no comments.....

Well... The test code is written, and the game should play OK. I will need all the players to enter their first turn for each of their countries (you only have one right now). After saving your country turns, you should mark the "Turn Finished" and click the Update Player button. Once I see that everyone is finished, I will trigger the Computer Turn. If the first few turns go smoothly, I will setup the computer turn to go automatically when the last player finishes up :D.

Here is a picture of my control-panel. It shows that Che has indicated his turn is entered. I have entered my turn, but not flagged that I am finished. I blanked out our actual moves, so you cannot tell what we are doing ;)

OK. I removed Junta Joe at his request. Once estio enters his turn, we will do the first Computer Turn.

I noticed several of you have entered no move for your country. This is OK... but it looks better on the control panel if you bring up your country and hit the Update Country button... Then I know you are really just sitting pat, and didnt enter a move and forgot to hit the Update Country button.

Estio is abit busy.... I left his country in the game without a move for this turn..... The Computer turn is done and recorded, so everyone can enter their next turn now.

I think what I might do is.... play the Computer turn everyday or maybe every two days..... whether everyone is done or not. That will make for a faster testgame.

I like 24-hours. It should be no problem for each player to spend a few minutes a day on a turn.

I would suggest posting the starting and ending times of the time-period you choose.

Does the game software give you a lot of latitude in setting your game-turns?

There is no real "game-software" per se.... I wrote this game-webpage from scratch, so it pretty much does what I want.

Right now I am clicking my "do turn" button -- as you see a few posts up -- to run the computer turn. I doubt I could setup a program to run daily.... although with this webhost it might be possible. Probably it will be safer to simply designate a time that I will click-the-button.....

OK.... starting tomorrow I will click the button every day at Noon CST. That is 1-PM EST, 6-PM GMT.

All the turns are in except for estio..... Paintballer hasnt clicked the Turn-Done button, but I can see he entered a turn. I will go ahead and wait until Noon CST and use that as my Computer-turn time.

 :o Outstanding, I thought you were using the "game package" that is part of the phpBB software.

I looked at the package... when Peron was up and running.

It gave me a major headache :?

The test-game seems to be working great... I'm eagerly awaiting the next turn :)

You ain't just whistlin' dixie... it could have been worse.

I'm looking forward to a 3 or 4 way battle

Have you given any thought to "allies?"

Some in-game method of pacting with another player or players.
