Broomdalf, myself, and a few other friends frequently game together. We've been playing such wonderful favorites as Master of Orion II and Heroes of Might and Magic III, but it's been quite a while since we've had a new game to enjoy. Any suggestions?

Dominions II--though Dominions III will be out soon, so I'd wait for that. I'll buy it and play with you guys if you go for it.

It's a small publisher, the graphics are shite, but the tbs can not be beat, particularly if you have any interest whatsoever in games involving magic, summoning demons (or angels), and so on. Not to mention that you get to be a god. Well, a pretender god, who becomes a god when he eliminates all the other pretenders (and thus the goal of the game).

Dominions II had well over 1000 unit types, 17 nations which mostly had between 1 and 3 extra themes, that change many of the units, and in some cases spells, available to the nation (and, in the case of Ermor, makes it so that all of their units are undead and aren't recruited by normal means but have to be summoned or simply show up), 8 magic schools with ~100 spells each (which have to be researched), and about 300 magic items. There are combat spells, global enchantments, summoning spells, etc. There's also a line of blood magic, for which you need to hunt around for sacrificial virgins. Although I tended to just wait to research enough alteration magic to Wish for them.

Anyway, amazing game. Supports server-based play (I used to run 2-3 games at a time, everyone gets 24 hours to play their turns, then the server auto-hosts), play-by-email (you email the host the turn files, then he sends you the results back), and hotseat play.

Another suggestion: risk, at www.conquerclub.com. This one is free :P
